The greatest advantage of transdermal drug delivery over oral delivery is that the transdermally delivered drug enters the systemic circulation directly, bypassing the first pass through the liver and the metabolic degradation of orally administered drugs by the liver. Consequently, the bioavailability of transdermally administered drugs can be much greater than that for orally administered drugs.

From our current knowledge, it would appear that there is both an ethical and clinical need for development, research and practical use of transdermal (patch) delivery systems in the development of medical marijuana for the treatment of chronic conditions.
